Deusivailo spread the
messages: “Togetherness for water”
Tihar is considered as 2nd
greatest festival of Nepal. And “DeusiVailo”
is one of traditional culture that is generally played for fun on this occasion.
People form different age group plays deusi and vailo for entertainment from
which people raise some funds; they all have their own purposes of raising
fund.
Following this culture,
youths from Paschim Paaila in collaboration with Pathivara Nava Yuva Club,
Pathivara tole played DeusiVailo at
different organizations and different community. This program was organized with
the aim of raising funds that can be used for social cause as youth led
initiatives.
The cause for the program
was to upgrade the existing water
supply facilities and constructing Bio-Sand Filter of Pathivara Community,
Kapan VDC. Youths form Pathivara community contributed their talent for their
own community which really inspires other youths as well. The objective was to
support the efforts of youths from Pathivara to construct Bio-Sand
Filter that can supply water to whole community and also to develop the better
fellowship between community, Youths and various organizations working in the
Environmental Health and Disaster sector.
“Deusivailo” program was played on six different organizations which
were Environment & Public Health Organization (ENPHO), WASH-Resource Center
Network Nepal (WASH-RCNN), AYON, UN-HABITAT, Oxfam, Clean Energy Nepal on 13th
November, 2012. These organizations showed their support financially and also
committed for technical support. This program was able to collect good fund and
establish better relation with different organization that are working in the
sector of WASH and environment. Total NRs. 28,401/- was collected form these
organizations.
The team of Pathivara are
now preparing for the implementation of the program. Further more Regional
Technical Advisor of UN-Habitat, Mr. Bhusan Tuladhar, said -“UN-Habitat will always be there for other
technical support as well if needed”. These words boosted up the energy of
Youths from Pathivara and Paschim Paaila. Also all other organizations were delighted
to be the part of the events and they also enjoyed a lot with the team.
WASH Exhibition @ Water Expo-2012
As a
part of the event “Nepal Water Expo 2012”, Environment and Public Health
Organization (ENPHO), “paschim paaila” and Center for Affordable Water and
Sanitation Technology (CAWST) jointly exhibited with the
objective of sharing new possible technologies; values, importance, uses, reuse
and recycling of waste water with public. Hands on demo of low cost water
technology i.e., Bio-sand filter by Shivadas Gamal, Field Co-ordinator, ENPHO;
Constructed wetland, SODIS technology, Eco-san were main attraction of the
exhibition.
The
event was formally inaugurated by former Minister of Environment Science &
Technology, Mr. Ganesh Shah, actor Mr. Rajesh Hamal, Mr. Rabi Giri and actress
Ms. Jharana Thapa by watering the plant in the vase. In the first day,
participants were specially form institutions. The exhibition time was
scheduled from 11am to 6pm. “It is far better to use local resources
for the purification of water as low cost water technology”-said a
visitor after knowing about the Bio-Sand Filter. Most of the visitors were also
fascinated by social marketing of Piyush and P/A Vial (Bacteria test kit) with
subsidies rate. Visitors were also comforted for getting update from different
organization in water sector. The exhibition was held for 3 days starting from
4th to 6th May, 2012.
Untangling
the Knot regarding Water, Sanitation and Food Security on WASH FORUM
March, considered as
the month of water, being celebrated World Water Day on 22nd of
March. The theme for this year was “Water and Food Security”. Focusing
on the issue the topic entitled “Water
Sanitation and Food Security: Untangling the Knot” was conducted on 30th
March 2012 as a part of WASH FORUM, March discussion series.
Mr. Madan Kumar Chapagain,
Department of Food Technology and Quality Control shared key notes on “Water
Sanitation and Food Security: Interlinking three factors relating water
sanitation and food security”. He focused on perspectives of water and
food security, some facts, present scenarios and challenges on the issues. He
also highlighted on the governmental efforts.
Following the
session, Dr. Saroj Kumar Chapagain, Center of Research for Environment, Energy and Water (CREEW) shared the outcomes of Nepal
National Water Week-12 with linking the issues of water, sanitation and food
security. He said, “All the efforts made in between has definitely supported to untangle
the knots and shown the direction to the solution.” All participant
form different institutions actively participated on the forum to untangle the
knot relating the water sanitation and food security through the open
discussion with resource persons.
Disaster is unexpected and destructive event that may occur any time with less or no warning, therefore it is necessary to be prepared for such events. In order to make people aware regarding disaster, its effects and safety “paschim paaila” conducted a class at Lovely Angel English Boarding School, Faika Chowk Kapan. Class was conducted on 3rd February 2012, for half day together with students from class 7-9.Youths from “paschim paaila” shared their knowledge on Disaster, its general types but main focus was given to the Earthquake. As for Nepal “Earthquake” is considered as major disaster, information regarding its impact and safety measures that can be applied at Pre-event, during and Post event should be provided and shared.
Earthquake itself is a great disaster as we can never know exact time, date and place of the earthquake. Therefore, it is very important for all of us to be well prepared. Not only we but all people of the nation should be made aware about such disasters. Kathmandu valley is placed in the earthquake susceptible environs. Inhabitants of these places are aware of the threat that may be produced due to the earthquake but still they are ignoring the whole story .All these issues should be openly discussed at school level too.
In order to make the class more interactive, the class was conducted as interaction, learning & sharing session through paper presentation. We could see active involvement of student. Students showed their interest on the topic “Earthquake and epidemics” where they shared their ideas regarding these issues.The classes also helped them to boost up their information arena. They learned about the nature and the impact the earthquake, epidemic that may arises after the disaster, different safety methods applicable during the events.
